Sabbah’s Blog – Palestine: If Silwan’s Stones Could Speak

“Who controls the past, controls the future. Who controls the present, controls the past.” (George Orwell, 1984)

Historically, Jerusalem began as a small village where the Palestinian village of Silwan sits today. Currently, Silwan has a population of over 45,000 Palestinians. Underneath their homes and ragged streets lie the remnants of 5000 years of glorious nations who lived there.
In recent weeks, university professors and lecturers from all over the world have been signing a petition aiming at stopping using archaeology against the residents of Silwan. The petition calls to stop ELAD from exploiting archaeology for their Zionist dreams. It is still possible to sign the petition. You can find it here: http://www.alt-arch.org/signpetition.html

Dear Friends,

Two years ago (in March 2006) it became evident that more and more people with foreign passports (of Palestinian descent and other) were being denied entry and re-entry into the Occupied Palestinian Territory. The situation not only continues, but has worsened this year.

Among persons denied entry are individuals in the film industry, three of whom are named below.

Please help ICRR convince the Israeli authorities to reconsider the denied entry and to enable these three women and others from the film industry to enter the OPT without delay. Please sign our petition, and distribute it widely.

Thanks,

Dorothy

Antiwar.com Action Alert
Iran War Resolution May Be Passed Next Week

Quick Links
H. Con. Res. 362 S. Res. 580Newsletter Take ActionDonate

Introduced less than a month ago, Resolution 362, also known as the Iran War Resolution, could be passed by the House as early as next week.

The bill is the chief legislative priority of AIPAC. On its Web site, AIPAC endorses the resolutions as a way to ''Stop Iran's Nuclear Program" and tells readers to lobby Congress to pass the bill. In the Senate, a sister resolution, Resolution 580, has gained co-sponsors with similar speed. The Senate measure was introduced by Indiana Democrat Evan Bayh on June 2. It has since gained 19 co-sponsors.

The bill's key section "demands that the president initiate an international effort to immediately and dramatically increase the economic, political, and diplomatic pressure on Iran to verifiably suspend its nuclear enrichment activities by, inter alia, prohibiting the export to Iran of all refined petroleum products; imposing stringent inspection requirements on all persons, vehicles, ships, planes, trains, and cargo entering or departing Iran; and prohibiting the international movement of all Iranian officials not involved in negotiating the suspension of Iran's nuclear program."

"Imposing stringent inspection requirements on all persons, vehicles, ships, planes, trains, and cargo entering or departing Iran" can be read to mean that the president should initiate a naval blockade of Iran. A unilateral naval blockade without UN sanction is an act of war.

Resolution 362 has already gained 170 co-sponsors, or nearly 40 percent of the House. It has been referred to the Foreign Affairs Committee, which has 49 members, 24 of whom, including the ranking Republican, are co-sponsors. The Iran Nuclear Watch Web site writes, "According to the House leadership, this resolution is going to 'pass like a hot knife through butter' before the end of June on what is called suspension - meaning no amendments can be introduced during the 20-minute maximum debate. It also means it is assumed the bill will pass by a 2/3 majority and is non-controversial."

Our national legislators deem it non-controversial to recommend to a president known for his recklessness and bad judgment that he consider engaging in an act of war against Iran. Those of you who consider this issue controversial can go to the Just Foreign Policy Web site and tell your representative to oppose this resolution.

British Government Apology to the Palestinians

View Current Signatures - Sign the Petition

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To: The Rt Hon Gordon Brown MP, Prime Minister

We, the undersigned, have been shocked with your recent statement where you said that "the creation of the state of Israel was one of the greatest achievements of the 20th century" on 8 May 2008. How is Israel one of the greatest achievements of the 20th Century when it is considered by so many people worse than South Africa’s Apartheid. As you know, being a historian and politician, the establishment of Israel led for example to the catastrophe Nakhbah of the Palestinians! 6 wars! 6 million refugees! 3 million under occupation! 1,5 million abducted-hostages! 254 km of an Apartheid-Wall! 562 humiliating-check-points! 20,000 political-prisoners! 468,831 new settlers on occupied land!

It is time the British Government apologies to the Palestinians for the role it played in the 20th century which led to the disappearance of Palestine! Denial of any human-rights; any national-rights; any historical-rights; any political-rights; any religious rights to the Palestinians! and for 60 years of their constant suffering, misery, deprivation, massacres, and ethnic-cleansing!

Sincerely,

Andrew... You are unstoppable! I love this one! I think an apology is long overdue. I signed: No 100! I will forward it to my mailing list. Thanks for being so steadfast with this cause bro! Great work! I am working on one for Stephen Harper too. He had the audace to say that "an enemy of Israel is an enemy of Canada!" You should see the Zionist propaganda shows they are shoving down Canadian's throats! I don't even refer to myself as a Canadian anymore, just a British-Columbian, a tree hugger, etc.. I am so ashamed by the actions and attitudes of this minority government! [Sigh]

As usual, there's more:

Petition to End Israel’s Restrictions on Freedom of Movement and the Press

To: Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice
U.S. Department of State
2201 C Street NW
Washington, DC 20520

We, the undersigned, condemn Israel’s appalling treatment of Palestinian journalist Mohammed Omer, Washington Report on Middle East Affairs Gaza correspondent and author of the magazine’s regular feature, “Gaza on the Ground.” The 24-year-old Palestinian journalist was brutally assaulted by Israeli Shin Bet security officials at the Allenby Bridge border crossing on his way home to Gaza on June 26. He had just received the 2008 Martha Gellhorn Prize for Journalism, which he shared with independent American journalist Dahr Jamail. Omer’s award citation reads, “Every day, he reports from a war zone, where he is also a prisoner. His homeland, Gaza, is surrounded, starved, attacked, forgotten. He is a profoundly humane witness to one of the great injustices of our time. He is the voice of the voiceless.” (see John Pilger’s July 2 article, “From Triumph to Torture,” in the Guardian: "">http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2008/jul/02/israelandthepal...)

This is not an isolated incident, Pilger points out, but part of a terrible pattern. [More & Sign Petition]

EDM 1926: FREEDOM OF JOURNALISTS AND THE MEDIA IN ISRAEL

Tabled on the 1st July 2008 by Colin Breed MP

"That this House condemns the actions of the Israeli security forces with regard to the Palestinian journalist and joint winner of the 2008 Martha Gellhorn Prize for Journalism, Mohammed Omer, who after briefing Members of Parliament on the situation in the Gaza Strip, attempted to re-enter the Occupied Territories via the Allenby Bridge and was interrogated at the crossing, strip-searched at gunpoint and beaten for four hours resulting in hospitalisation after he lost consciousness; expresses concern that harassment, intimidation and even killing of journalists has been too frequent an occurrence, particularly since the outbreak of the Intifada in 2000; calls on Israel and all other parties to uphold the freedom of journalists to report; further calls on the Israeli government to launch a full independent inquiry, to compensate Mohammed Omer in full for his injuries; and urges the Government to raise this issue with the government of Israel at the earliest opportunity."
