About Me:
NIZAR AL-ISSA ... Singer, Composer, Oud Master.

Nizar Al-Issa's naturally powerful, passionate voice has been called 'the authentic sound of the Middle East'. His extraordinary vocal range & control resonates immediately, and intimately, with audiences. Combine this great voice with his gifts as a composer & songwriter, and add his mastery of the Oud to the mix and you have a uniquely versatile, talented musician who's making waves along with great music!

Nizar

Authentic Voice. Extraordinary Talent
A dynamic & exciting live performer, Nizar credits his ability to sing in a variety of styles to his refugee background and his choice of a music education in Egypt over his family's wishes for a more academic path ...

'I think I've always sung', he says. 'From a really early age I was listening to the sounds all around me - from the great Arabic singers to the local guys at weddings & parties, even the fisherman & farmers ...everything I heard went in somewhere!' And I've always written songs, it comes very naturally to me - although the technique, the skills in using my voice, composition & mastery of the Oud are down to years of practice & training!'

Nizar's style rejects easy labels. He's one of a handful of players to include a bespoke, hand-made electric Oud into his performance repertoire, a move that doesn't always please the purists but makes for an exciting addition to his work. 'Yes, I'm an Arabic singer, composer who can sing in the language & traditions of many countries in the Middle East' he laughs. 'Iraqi's ask me if I'm from Iraq, while the Egyptians are convinced I'm from Cairo and in Spain they're sure I've spent time learning Gypsy Flamenco'. 'But the heart & soul of my music is the knowledge that we all share far more in common as human beings than we acknowledge, wherever we come from ...'

Nizar's recent collaborations reflect this beautifully, crossing musical divides in gigs with celebrated jazz musicians, as well as working with his new band Finjaan to create exciting, contemporary sounds with his own uniquely Middle Eastern flavour.

Nizar Al-Issa's reputation continues to grow with an increasing presence on the London scene as well as an impressive list of Festival performances in the UK, Italy, Morocco & Tunisia.

'Incredible voice - fascinating artist' ... Old Bailey Club, London

'Nizar's the real thing ... a superb voice, great live performer' ... Hamburg NDF Jazz Festival

'Very exciting artist ... plays & sings with Flamenco in his soul!' ... Vigo Festival, Madrid

'Superb. A really talented musician, in touch with his roots & his audience ...!' .... Greenbelt Festival 2007
